Date : 1762 (-1780). / Les 2 premiers volumes portent pour adresse : "Printed by T. Farmer at Strawberry-Hill" ; le 3e volume ne porte pas de nom d'imprimeur mais la date : "1763" ; le titre du 4e volume porte : "Anecdotes of painting in England... to which is added the History of the modern taste in gardening, volume the fourth and last", avec l'adresse "Strawberry-Hill, printed by T. Kirgate, 1771", alors que l'"Advertisement" de Walpole est daté : "October 1., 1780". Ce dernier volume en effet, imprimé dès 1771, ne fut rendu public qu'en 1780. - Le texte intitulé "History of the modern taste in gardening" est celui qui sera publié isolément en 1785, sous le titre "Essay on modern gardening". - On trouve relié à la fin du 4e volume : "Additional lives to the first edition of Anecdotes of painting in England, in vol. II"..., pp. 1-12, puis "Additional lives to the first edition of Anecdotes of painting in England, vol. III"... - Rel. mar. rouge à dentelles, avec armoiries et devise de Walpole sur les 2 plats pour les volumes I-III".
